Author: Logan Foster Date: 06/07/2025

When it comes to ensuring election integrity and protecting the votes of Hoosiers, Diego Morales has made it clear that he is a leader who delivers results. Running for re-election as Indiana’s Secretary of State in 2026, Morales is attempting to rally Republicans across the state with his proven record of accomplishments and dedication to election security.
Redress South Bend’s Logan Foster had the opportunity to interview Morales 1 on 1 to discuss his background, his achievements during his tenure, and his vision for Indiana’s future.
A Proud Hoosier Story
Q1. Originally and legally immigrating to the United States from Guatemala in 1999, why did you and your family choose Indiana as a permanent residence? According to Morales, Indiana represents the realization of the American Dream. “My dad was doing business in the past, specifically in the Texas area. And then he had an opportunity to do business in the Midwest. And that's when he ended up arriving in southern Indiana. And he says, if someday I have the opportunity to raise a family, I will do it here.”
Morales explained that their decision to call Indiana home stemmed from a sense of hope and opportunity. Arriving without knowing the English language but with a commitment to adapting and contributing to their community, Morales stated, “We are going to give back. Because we came here to give back, to serve, to contribute, and not to be a burden for America... Now, I’m a proud Hoosier and a proud American.”
Commitment to Election Integrity
Q2. As Indiana’s Chief Election Officer, you are tasked with Election Security. Earlier this week, you gave the opening remarks at the State Certification Testing of Election Systems National Conference. Can you share about your time and role at the conference?
“I was able to provide opening remarks during the conference, and my job was to showcase Indiana and to share what Indiana is doing when it comes to elections...” said Morales. His office's efforts have focused on providing professional growth opportunities for county clerks and election officials to improve their handling of election processes. Morales highlighted his commitment to County Clerks, noting, “we took a bipartisan group of county clerks to Washington DC.”
Q3. St. Joseph County Clerk Amy Rolfes also gave a presentation at the conference, where St. Joseph County and six other Indiana counties scored 99% in their post-election audits. Does this reflect on the work your office is doing at the state level?

“First of all, Amy Rolfes is doing a great job. I am so proud to work alongside Amy. She is doing an amazing job as the County Clerk in St. Joseph County. And she gave a great presentation... hats off to Amy.” Morales said. “These post-election audits really work to showcase the work that is put to make sure Indiana's elections are accurate and secure... We introduced legislation this year to introduce procedural audits, meaning we're going to audit the elections from beginning to end to see the whole process. And I think it's a great thing because we want to give the public confidence, peace of mind that their vote is counted properly. Again, I'm all about having safe, secure, and accurate elections.”
Standing Strong on Federal Election Policies
Q4. President Trump recently issued an Executive Order aimed at protecting the integrity of American elections. Your office issued a statement in support of this order. Do you believe it’s important for all state and federal leaders to stand united on issues like election security?
“Absolutely,” Morales responded firmly. His office has introduced policies such as proof of citizenship for voter registration and stricter voter ID requirements.
When asked how the Biden administration treated election security, Morales added, “To put it simply, the Biden administration, they didn't care.” The slightly longer story: “the Biden administration made our elections less secure by letting a flood of migrants into our country and attempting to give them legal status...”
Why Republicans Should Rally Around Morales
Q5. Looking ahead to the GOP convention, why do you believe it is important for Republicans to rally behind a proven winner like yourself?
“The goal is to win, and I have won. I am the true incumbent. I won statewide even when the Democrats and their allies in the liberal media went after me relentlessly. I still won by the same margins that Governor Braun and Lieutenant Governor Beckwith won last year."
Morales emphasized his ability to fundraise effectively, noting, “You have to have the ability to raise money to win. I have raised more than a million dollars last time, and we will have much more (this time)." One of his personal goals for the upcoming election? “God willing, I would like to win St. Joseph County for the first time as the Secretary of State. That way St. Joseph County can appoint the inspectors, and local Republican candidates can be placed first on the local ballot.”
Addressing Criticism
Q6. One of your opponents for the 2026 Convention, when sharing why he is running for office, stated: “Indiana needs results.” insinuating that you have not generated results. What do you have to say to anyone who believes you have not delivered for the state of Indiana?
“Look at my record,” Morales replied. He outlined several achievements during his tenure, including strengthening voter ID laws, increasing voter list maintenance, introducing procedural audits, and requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration. Morales added: “According to the Heritage Foundation election scorecard, Indiana is now in the top 10 states when it comes to election integrity. We have never been in the top 10. Now we are because of the good work that I'm doing. Promises made, promises kept.”
Vision for the Future
Q7. For the remainder of your term, and if Hoosiers across the state elect you to serve again in 2026, what are your goals going forward for our great State?
Not only did Secretary of State Morales answer our question, but he fluently listed off a barrage of objectives and projects his office is currently involved in. See a few of Secretary Morales’ responses below:
“we will continue to promote and support legislation that puts more emphasis on election day. We support the legislation to shorten the early voting period by half this year.”
“And also, we support action at the federal level to document proof of citizenship for all voter registration applications.”
“I hope to continue work(ing on) modernizing Indiana's statewide voter registration and election management system"
"we would like to expand Indiana's campaign finance portal to include local candidate committees and PACs to enhance transparency.”
“as well as support action at the federal level to remove outdated restrictions that limit states' ability to perform comprehensive voter list maintenance."
Secretary of State Diego Morales closed our conversation with a reminder that his role goes far beyond titles and accolades. “being Secretary of State is not a job. It's a passion,” he said conscionable. “And I give 100% every single day because it's never been about Diego Morales. It's always about giving back to Indiana and America that has given me everything.” Through his tireless dedication to election integrity and his unwavering commitment to the Hoosier community, Morales continues to set his sights on building a future where every vote counts, every election is secure, and a future where Indiana serves as a model for the nation.
