About Redress

The liberty of the press is essential and indivisible;it must be upheld for every individual or it becomes meaningless for all.

The First Amendment grants us "the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances." Just to clarify, a redress of grievances implies the freedom to voice our concerns to our government without the fear of retaliation. It's crucial to remember that free speech isn't always agreeable or comfortable - it can challenge and provoke. It's this very discomfort that makes free speech a fundamental right protected by the First Amendment. Redress was created to remind our government that they serve "WE THE PEOPLE," not any single individual or office. Our elected council members should be the voice of their districts, not just puppets in the bureaucratic machine. We are here to rally together, to enjoy the process, and to reclaim our city. I've spent the majority of my life - 23 out of 29 years - residing in South Bend, with over two decades living in the heart of the city and its western region. I've observed firsthand some of South Bend's shortcomings and its failure to address residents' concerns, which led to the birth of "Redress South Bend." Remember, nobody advocates for you better than yourself!

Our Story

Founded in the heart of South Bend, Redress emerged from a grassroots effort initiated by a local resident determined to seek answers and accountability following a distressing incident of gun violence in their own backyard. Frustrated by the repeated refusal of Mayor James Mueller's office to facilitate a dialogue, despite publicly offering meetings to constituents, the founder's quest for engagement took a drastic turn when they were removed from the municipal building by security during their final attempt to secure a meeting. This pivotal moment marked the birth of Redress South Bend, transforming personal grievance into a public platform for advocacy and change.

All Voices Were Created Equal

I hold a firm belief in the equality of all voices. In the accompanying photograph, you'll notice the state of the sidewalks in my neighborhood—a testament to the City of South Bend's preference for lavish expenditures downtown over ensuring walkable, functional sidewalks for west-side residents. It appears that the city's priorities lean heavily towards areas that generate higher revenues and are more likely to turn out and vote for Democratic candidates. Shouldn't the Mayor's responsibility extend to all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations or the constituencies they belong to? The marginalization and silencing of west-side voices is a concerning trend. Together, we can amplify our voices and reclaim the attention and respect that every community deserves.
